Chapter from: "What's Next, Gen X?: Keeping Up, Moving Ahead, and Getting the Career You Want"
Published by: Harvard Business Publishing
Originally published in: 2010

Abstract

Understanding why people from other generations behave the way they do will give you, as a member of Generation X, an advantage as you work with them - whether they be your bosses, colleagues, clients, partners, or customers. This chapter is about 'them' - the other generations who share your workplace and your lives: the Traditionalists, Boomers, Generation Y, and the up-and-coming Re-Generation. In the workplace, confusion and frustration often erupt from simple generation gap miscommunications. This chapter will help you navigate these often rocky waters and explain what they are thinking. Author Tammy Erickson explores the formative years for each generation, explaining and translating the differences in the role each generation feels work should play in their lives, how they react to specific work-related experiences, and how they relate to each other. Understanding the priorities of these different generations will help you shape your own priorities and navigate toward success. This chapter was originally published as Chapter 3 of What's Next, Gen X?: Keeping Up, Moving Ahead, and Getting the Career You Want. This chapter is excerpted from ‘What's Next, Gen X?: Keeping Up, Moving Ahead, and Getting the Career You Want'.
