Abstract

Banking sector in India constitutes 70% market share and is at the core of the economic growth. In the recent years, however, the non-performing assets have ballooned out of proportion causing a quick drop in the market capitalization of the 28 public sector banks. The NPA situation is threatening the existence of banks and immediate remedial action is required. Cleaning up of balance sheet in preparation for Basel norms, recovering the NPAs by way of asset restructuring and reconstruction and prudent lending norms are called for.
