Abstract
India's previous performances at the Olympic Games demonstrated that although India had been the most populous nation in the world, its performance had always been dismal. India did not win a single Olympic medal in 1988 and 1992. The medal tally moved up from zero in previous Olympics to one each in the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympics. However, India's medal tally continued to witness trivial progress in the past few Olympics. India won three medals in 2008 (including the first individual Olympic gold medal), six medals in 2012 and 3 medals in 2016. The reasons for its perpetual poor performance was lack of sports culture among Indians, lack of infrastructure, lack of resources, apathy of government and non-availability of good coaches to train the sports persons. Nevertheless, the government has started taking several major steps to ensure better performance in the ensuing 2020 Olympics. With this backdrop, it remained to be seen whether India would be able to break away from the legacy of poor performance.
