Abstract
This is part of a case series. Deji was leading a group of professionals from a variety of functions in KIOS, a small Nigerian private branding and packaging consulting - Finance, Logistics, Purchasing, etc. He was hired in 6 months earlier to be a leader of leaders - to vision, organise and coordinate them. He wanted a team where communication flowed freely and he impressed this on them soon after he joined the company. Long before he was hired, KIOS had been trying to develop a business relationship with AlphaTel, a small but fast growing telecommunications company. Finally, AlphaTel gave them a contract to procure, brand and deliver products for a series of promotions they were planning to run as part of its brand exposure strategy. The only concern Deji had was the lead-time. Although he had a good track record in advertising, Deji had never worked in branding and packaging. He wanted to get information from his more expert line managers to enable him make a decision on whether or not to do the job, so he convened a meeting. As individuals, the function leaders all privately understood that the lead time was short and that it would be very risky to embark on the project given the time of the year but no one spoke up confidently about it. In the end under much pressure the project was executed but the outcome was far below the standards KIOS and AlphaTel expected.
