Abstract
All Nippon Airway's (ANA) story spanned over sixty years when, relying on only two helicopters, Japan Helicopter & Aeroplane Transports Co., Ltd. was established in December 1952 with the goal of restoring regular air transportation services disrupted by WWII. ANA had always been an entrepreneurial private company in an industry characterized by government supported and subsidized national carriers. Former Chief executive Shinichiro Ito was quoted as saying, 'Ever since ANA was established, from our very first step into this existence, we have been a private-sector company'. This case study is predominantly based on empirical data collected by the authors and includes first-hand information about ANA's decision to establish Digital Design Lab (DDL). The unit was established in April 2016, and data for this case study was collected during fall 2016, so we have been able to follow DDL's development closely as it has taken its first steps. As such, this case study is an exciting and unique opportunity for your students to learn about the challenges related to organizational change and experimentation and how organizations transform and renew over time through various design-driven approaches. Suggested student levels: graduate, executive & MBA.
