Abstract

Historically, employer-employee loyalty was reciprocal. However, it underwent a total change with the transformation of business environment, arrival of the younger generation of workforce and the internet. Each generation of employees had specific goals, expectations and requirements which influenced the employer-employee dynamics. Days of the lifetime employment at one company were over as employees became more career oriented. On the other hand, companies were also no longer in a position to offer lifetime employment. Nevertheless, it was important to balance the employer-employee equation in a changing work scenario so as to achieve individual and organisational growth by strategically aligning individual career development with company objectives. There was a fundamental shift in the employer-employee relationship in sync with the rapidly evolving global business. It had to be supported and reinforced through personal relationships. Further, employers had to build up a work culture having open communication, trust building and recognition for achievement as well as work appreciation. This would inculcate and strengthen employee loyalty. The business world got characterised by technological and sociological transformations. Meanwhile, emotionally attached employees exhibited higher productivity. The approach of human resources had changed from work-life balance to work-life integration for increasing employee engagement and retention. In such a scenario, would employers be able to establish a conducive, appropriate and loyal employer-employee relationship?
