Abstract

During the session, participants will complete a developmental network exercise. This will involve creating a developmental network map of their current set of relationships, analyzing the structure and content of that network, and assessing the fit of their network with their leadership development needs. In this process, they will review the various types of networks, strategies for networking, initiating new developmental relationships, and sustaining their network. They will formulate goals and an action plan to utilize these tools going forward. The exercise is appropriate to use in the following classes: Organizational Behavior, Careers, Leadership, Human Resources, and Entrepreneurship. There are several versions of the 'Building Your Developmental Network' exercise, depending on the audience and amount of time for the session: (A) 'Building Your Developmental Network' is a long version for executives, advanced graduate students and general audiences (90 minutes); (B) 'Building Your Developmental Network' is a four page version for executives, advanced graduate students and general audiences (60 minutes); (C) 'Developmental Network Map' is a two page short version for executives, advanced graduate students and general audiences (45 minutes); (D) 'Developmental Network Map for Entrepreneurs ' is a two page short exercise for entrepreneurs at any stage; (E) 'Building Your Developmental Network' is for faculty and is a long version for use with college and university faculty; (F) 'Building Your Developmental Network' is for students and is a long version for use with undergraduate students
