Abstract

This is the first of a three-case series. On 5 February 2009, the Minister responsible for the National Library, Richard Worth, launched New Zealand's National Digital Heritage Archive (NZDHA). The $24 million project, initiated in 2004, had been delivered on time and under budget. 'National Libraries are more usually associated with collecting and preserving physical documents, and while this continues to be a key role, the Library, under the guidance of its Chief Executive, Penny Carnaby, has also embraced digital content and the opportunities it provides', the Minister said. This case study can be used to discuss the strategic alignment of an organisation facing the rapid evolution of its role; aspects of leadership including whether a visionary leader who has raised the external profile of an organisation can also effect culture change; the relationship between organisational and physical design, and the issues arising when an organisation includes multiple cultures, some with deeply entrenched differences.
