Abstract

Dramatic changes have occurred in the steel industry in recent years. In particular, the mini-mill revolution with new technology to use scrap materials and to operate profitably without the need for huge plants is examined. The note analyzes the role of governments in fostering the development of domestic steel corporations and examines the role of trade unions, particularly their impact on wage increases. Faced with these wage increases and high costs, many steel corporations face new competitive pressures from newly industrialized countries. The note analyzes globalization trends in the steel industry.
