Abstract

Android, the mobile operating system (OS) developed by Google had been the lifeline for various smart devices. In 2017, Google launched a relatively 'stripped down' version of the original Android and named it as Android Oreo (Go edition). Oreo Go was positioned for use in low end smartphones and was anticipated to drive internet usage amongst consumers. The newly-launched operating system was designed to create a unified Google experience to Internet users, who were using cheap handsets. When installed on basic level smartphones, it would allow users to get access to Google services like YouTube, Google Maps etc. Experts had acknowledged that the OS would enable greater market penetration for smartphones in India. The newly launched OS was designed in such a way to consume much less data and promised to create an optimal experience for the first-time users. However, ever since the announcement of the OS, a lot of confusion was prevailing in the market. Amidst this scenario, would Android Oreo Go enhance the user experience and change the face of consumer demand in the smartphone market of India?
