Abstract

The vice-president of a 350-person consulting engineering firm faces a difficult situation. Instead of getting his second-in-command to agree to sponsor the postgraduate studies of one of the business unit''s engineers he insisted that the vice-president get rid of her or he would quietly resign, taking others with him. He also suggested that the vice- president unduly favored the engineer and that it was up to him to save the vice-president from continuing to make that same mistake. The vice- president was concerned that his resignation would create waves, thus hurting his own chances for getting a promotion out of the expected reshuffling with the impending retirement of the firm''s president. He valued the contributions that both Andrew and Wendy had made to Decker Woods and wanted to see them both remain with the company.
