Abstract

Arby's, the roast beef food chain was on a revival mode. Its CEO Paul Brown (Brown) had quickly put in place several strategies to turnaround the ailing brand. From revamping menus, focussing on advertising and PR, and redesigning stores, Brown's strategies were paying-off. There was a significant increase in both sales and profits and Brown planned to increase stores across the country. The company however had a long way to go, with its sales just a little more than one point of market share in the USD300 billion QSR/fast casual industry. More recently, Arby's parent, Roark Capital Group, announced that it had bought Buffalo Wild Wings in a USD2.9 billion deal. Promoted with the slogan, 'wings, beer, sports', Buffalo Wild Wings, had struggled being impacted by a slump in the casual dining industry. Investors hoped that Brown would do the same turnaround for Buffalo Wild Wings too. A number of other potential changes were expected. How this would impact Arby's and how its turnaround could be sustained remained to be seen.
