Abstract

Maslow was one of the founding fathers of humanistic psychology, who emphasised upon the growth and self-actualisation of an individual through a need hierarchy pyramid. Keeping Maslow as the basic theory, several other motivational theories were postulated. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory, which was built upon human needs and their fulfilment, tallied well with the workplace needs globally. However, Maslow had proposed his theory way back in the 20th century, and analysts argued that it had lost its relevance in the modern context. When a study was recently conducted among employees from different occupational groups, it was observed that their order of needs changed depending upon the occupational requirements of organisations in the 21st Century. Against this backdrop, HR analysts were pondering whether Maslow's Hierarchy of needs theory was relevant in the 21st century considering the technological developments and the entry of millennials in the workforce? Should Maslow's need hierarchy theory be tweaked for motivating the 21st century millennial workforce?
