Abstract

Even though e-Commerce started in UAE way back in late 90s, year 2017 was hailed as 'Coming of Age' of Online Shopping. Souq.com was acquired by Amazon and Noon.com started with a funding of USD1 billion expanding both local and international offering. With a much higher internet access, proliferation of smart phones in the lives of people, online shopping was becoming huge in UAE with a spend of USD332 per transaction despite the fact that the residents shopped less frequently than the world average. With preference for shopping using smart phones and cash on delivery, local vendors were preferred by many shoppers. However, with advances in technology and logistics many shoppers started exploring global markets to seek quality products, better prices and bargains and wider choices. While e-Commerce was growing exponentially, it was still a small percentage of overall retail spent. With this background, it remained to be seen whether the vendors would focus on the right strategy to meet customer trust, quality, logistics, technology advances and personalization to prevent the customers from moving cross borders in their online search and shopping.
