Abstract
Deliveroo was a British online food delivery company founded by Will Shu and Greg Orlowski in 2013. The company had disrupted the food delivery industry in UK. The start-up had achieved massive success in just a few years. By 2016, the company had employed 300 people and had a network of 2000 delivery drivers and cyclists in London alone. The company had further expanded to 150 cities across 12 countries by 2017. Its innovative concepts like 'delivery only kitchen' had helped battle competition from prominent rivals like Uber and Amazon. In 2017, Deliveroo was awarded with the top most spot in Deloitte's annual ranking of UK's fastest growing technology companies. Deliveroo was further expanding its market presence in both domestic and international locations by launching an innovative concept called 'Marketplace+' in 2018. With its help the company was slated to reach six million UK customers and increase its network of 10000 restaurants by 50%. As of 2018, Deliveroo was also planning to enter new markets like Taiwan and India. However, experts were skeptical of its aggressive expansion plans, considering the regulatory challenges, mounting losses and intensified competition from new entrants like Uber Eats. Furthermore, there was yet another dilemma the company had to grapple with. The dilemma was whether to have a deal with Uber which would help them set foot in US market or go for an IPO. It remained to be seen what would be the most appropriate way forward for Deliveroo.
