Abstract

With the rapid growth of the Indian economy and increase in household incomes, holidaying on a luxury cruise liner was gaining momentum in India. In addition, the rich culture and heritage coupled with easy access to many natural ports had further driven growth in the country's cruise tourism industry. The Government of India had also undertaken several steps to boost cruise tourism in the country. In fact, cruise tourism in India was witnessing a rise in demand from the locals as well as international cruise vacation lovers. Some of the luxury cruise holiday options in the country included the Oberoi Motor Vessel Vrinda Cruise, the M V Mahabaahu Cruise, and the Vivada cruise on M V Paramhamsa. In addition to generating revenue in the form of passenger fares, port charges, etc, this industry had also helped in promoting several other industries such as guide service, handicraft and catering, and also earned foreign exchange for the country. However, there were challenges galore for cruise vacations in India. The primary challenge was the imposition of Goods & Services Tax (GST) which could limit the growth of the cruise tourism industry in India. Some of the other challenges included creating the right market atmosphere, facilitating easy immigration process, developing efficient security procedures, etc. Against this background, would the country succeed in driving the cruise tourism industry at par with the global standards?
