Abstract

Pound shops had long managed to find their places in the high streets of Britain. Especially during the early years of recession, when many of the retail stalwarts were vanishing fast from these streets, pound shops were busy piling up cheap and cheerful goods for the bargain hunters. They continued to amaze increasing size of the population with their quirky and adept strategies. They brought in a new kind of dynamism and a unique shopping culture, which on the other hand, significantly changed the overall retail environment in Britain. Within a very short period of time, pound shops' business thrived. But the insiders were apprehensive about the massive expansion of such fixed price discount shops. Finally, in the year 2018, like several other retail businesses in UK, Poundworld had also gone out of business. Even though, apparently it was challenged by the similar macroeconomic business scenarios, which had impacted other businesses in Britain, there were few additional hurdles which stifled its chance. So, what led to the demise of Poundworld? Was it indicating a looming crisis for the other fixed price shops in Britain?
