Abstract

Carrefour, the French grocery giant, had joined IBM's Food Trust blockchain network to improve traceability and checks on food products as they 'travelled from farms to stores.' The retailer was rolling-out blockchain technology across its entire supply chain as part of its 2022 turnaround plan, in a bid to trace food back to its source within seconds, unlike conventional transactions. Extending the blockchain deployment to all its fresh food ranges by the end of 2018, Carrefour hoped to leverage the transformational technology to create a global food traceability standard. With the collaboration, the company would use the cloud network to quickly identify and respond to the food contamination and salmonella epidemic challenges faced by the food industry. Following the likes of Walmart, Nestle and Unilever who had piloted the pioneering technology, Carrefour would use IBM's blockchain platform, to offer transparency right from production, processing to packaging. With the digital database, the retail chain was poised to efficiently track every step in the supply chain, including that of distributors and processors.
