Abstract
A 57 year old teacher has spent about 15 years preparing herself to become a high school principal with the local board of education and wonders whether she should continue trying to attain a goal that is so elusive, or take early retirement. After becoming a department head and a vice-principal, she has applied four times to be a principal. Each time, she is the only woman candidate. Although nearly always gaining an interview for the job, she is never chosen by the committee. Her qualifications match those of the male applicants who apply, but they are always chosen ahead of her. She does not know what she can do to improve her chances. She has been given some indication that she is too much of a ''lady'' for the job, and that the board is looking for younger candidates.
