The automotive industry in Canada includes both the manufacturing of motor vehicles and parts as well as the distribution and retailing of those products and related services. The automotive industry has long been a significant part of the Canadian economy, accounting recently for about four percent of Gross Domestic Product. Automotive parts manufacturing is Canada''s largest manufacturing industry, followed by motor vehicle assembly. The dollar retail sales of motor vehicles, parts and services account for 27% of total retail sales in Canada, the largest sector in retailing. In 1991, 90,000 people were employed in automobile retailing and 251,000 people were employed in after-market sales and service. This note describes basic statistics and trends in automobile retailing.
