In mid-June 1986, Don Jackson, regional vice-president at the Canadian Bank of Commercial Enterprises in Toronto, Ontario, began to consider his most recent loan proposal. Senior management and several other investors had just presented him with their plan for a management buyout of Smith and Haywood Drilling (S&H) from the parent company, Charger Resource Services Ltd (Charger). They had asked for $1,250,000 to help finance the purchase and provide some working capital. Closing date for the deal with Charger had been set for August 1.
