Abstract

Sustainability continued to be a major global trend in the packaging industry. While consumers consistently looked out for healthier food options, manufacturers with innovative packaging and processes positively impacted the environment. In fact, sustainable packaging had never been more important. While sustainable packaging previously used to mean packaging that could be composted, recycled or reused, lately manufacturers placed more focus on packaging technologies and trends that facilitated the reduction of waste and provided a safer product, while also enhancing their brand message. Increasing demands for sustainable products and responsible corporate behavior eventually reshaped the food and beverage industry, and the food packaging industry as a whole. The major areas where sustainability made a significant impact in food packaging included reduction of food waste on a priority basis, food safety, sustainability as part of the brand message, and sustainability as an investment. However, adopting sustainable practices in the food and beverage industry was not an easy task. Manufacturing cost and design, prices of sustainable materials, recycling infrastructure, and lack of stringent regulatory framework were some obstacles in sustainable packaging. Although companies adopted sustainable packaging as part of their larger goals, it remained to be seen whether the momentum was retained in the long run.
