Abstract
Workplace friendships enabled the bonding of people to improve engagement and build positive company culture. Many employees believed that co-worker friendship increased the happiness quotient and played a significant role in sustainable career success, job stability and good health. However, too close bonding amongst co-workers led to favouritism, harassment and conflicts besides abuse of power. Workplace conflicts were also created due to the difference in communication, style, competitive agendas, preferences, personal motives and interests. Moreover, in some instances, such a friendship was prone to complexities and emotional fatigue. Friendships amongst unequals led to an imbalance in workplace relationship, particularly when the boundaries between work and friendship were infringed. Even though the difference of opinion created uncomfortable situations, this helped in enriching work experience and learning. Hence, it was essential to maintain an appropriate balance in the work relationship for better personal, professional and organisational results. In the fast changing work environment, would workplace friendships be able to survive the pressures of the business world?
