Abstract
The acquisition by a consortium led by RBS of ABN Amro succeeded in time for the banking industry to collapse into chaos and in the case of RBS into nationalisation. The ABN Amro acquisition highlights the motivations and strategies of growth that many banks were pursuing prior to the financial crisis. Over exposure to sub-prime investment aided in the collapse but this occurred after a bruising battle between RBS' Fred Goodwin and Barclays' John Varley where both acted like corporate buccaneers rather than responsible bankers.
