Abstract

This is part of a case series. The story of Euro Advanced Technology Solutions is the story of its founder and entrepreneurial spirit Litan Bhowmik. It starts with Litan approaching his old MBA lecturer, in an attempt to get him to join the venture as it starts taking its first steps on the road to what he expects will be a profitable venture. Litan laid out his ideas which essentially were to set up a company to produce a machine for the process of water disinfection. He said that the scientist in Moscow who had developed the technology had, for a stake in the new company, signed the international patent over to Litan to commercialise and that a prototype had been built in Leeds University. The product which had been built as a prototype and tested in Leeds University, was based on Ultra Violet irradiation. Moreover, where the best products on the market could process 12,000 litres of water an hour his could process 50,000, killing all known pathogens. Litan painted a picture of selling his product to India where he had contacts in the Government and provided an example of this in terms of a city 'City A' in India with a population of seven million. However, Litan was economical with the truth and less than forthcoming with requested information on various aspects of setting-up and developing his company. He failed to appreciate the honesty and openness necessary in the formative stage of this development with the result that his efforts to build a successful venture were negated. Throughout the period of the case Litan shows a lack of openness and unwillingness to listen to advice to the point where trust is destroyed when requested information is not supplied and that which is proved fictitious.
