Abstract
Responding to significant public anxiety and political pressure concerning environmental degradation, the company accelerated its remedial and preventive efforts to protect the environment. By the end of the decade, the company had successfully developed and implemented managerial, organizational and operational changes that had significantly improved ecological results, and had also contributed meaningfully to the development of industry-wide standards of responsible environmental care. In 1990, the company was in the process of transforming its environmental protection initiatives into a more systemic approach to managing sustainable development in all aspects of its business from policy and strategy to the identification and development of new, future- oriented business opportunities.
