Abstract

This is part of a case series. Nick Barr was the Personnel Manager for Canadian company National Processing Inc, at its main processing and shipping plant. A young, male employee has just come to Nick's office and reported that his female coworkers were sneaking up behind him and grabbing his testicles. After learning about this concerning behavior, Barr must decide what to do. A number of things factor into his decision, including the safety and psychological welfare of the employee and his co-workers as well as Barr's responsibilities to the company and his personal reputation and job security. On the one hand, if he chooses to formally investigate the concern and punish those involved, the backlash against the complaining employee from his co-workers could be severe, and it could be disruptive to the company's operations. On the other hand, if he does nothing Barr may be failing in his duty to stand up for the interests of the employee, and he could be exposing himself and the company to legal risk. In Case A, the employee's experience is described. In Case B, Barr learns more about the situation.
