Abstract

A round-trip to Italy changed the life of a freelance journalist, and turned him into an accidental entrepreneur. Scott Keyes (Keyes), founder of Scott's Cheap Flights (SCF), had a knack for finding amazing low-rate flight deals online. He began monetising on his passion for finding cheap flight deals by charging USD2/month from subscribers of his newsletters. With a deep desire to experience adventure, Keyes managed to turn an obsession with cheap flights into a million-dollar start-up. Keyes built his empire just by manual hard labour, searching for huge deals that can be hundreds of dollars less than other published fares. Amid challenges, his subscriber list kept growing and reached to over 1.5 million members worldwide in 2019, while working remotely with a team of passionate searchers and travel aficionados from different corners of the world. From a side project to being the world's favourite cheap flight alert platform, SCF managed to hit the right note with travellers, where others could not. However, with so many prominent travel websites in the market, it remained to be seen whether SCF would continue to remain successful in its journey forward.
