Abstract

The case is about social entrepreneur Will Ruddick and his efforts to introduce social community currencies in Kenya. Students explore the social challenges these currencies aim to address, the possible designs and the historical experiences that support Will's decision-making. They understand pressing problems, including distribution, demurrage and community organization. The case ends with the challenge of finding a currency model for three informal settlements in Kisumu, Kenya. The case is part of the Historical Entrepreneurship Case Series and can be used by itself or in conjunction with the other cases of the series.
