Abstract

Twiga Foods Ltd (Twiga) was a Kenyan mobile-based, cashless, business-to-business (B2B) food supply platform, helping farmers distribute their agricultural produce to retailers. It provided access to a number of small and medium-sized vendors in Nairobi, leveraging technology and organising a more efficient supply chain that lowered food prices. Twiga had a larger vision to address issues around food production and distribution in Sub-Saharan Africa. The company had grown to become the largest domestic distributor of food produce in Kenya and had plans to expand throughout Kenya and across other countries in Africa. While the potential in Africa's retail markets were enormous, a number of issues and challenges remained. Would Twiga be able to scale its operations pan Africa and realise its vision to lower food costs for the average African?
