Abstract

Founded in 1962, Nike Inc was one of the leading sports related products manufacturers. From the beginning, Nike stressed on creative culture development by channelising innovation and encouraging new innovative ideas. Nike's corporate culture rested on values comprising - lead, coach, manage and inspire. These values were pivotal to the company's management strategy inculcating employee loyalty and team spirit. In the face of rising competition, Nike transformed its culture to focus on innovation as 'the Nike way of life' which resulted in prolonged excellence and business success. The corporation's 50 years of success was achieved by embracing disruption, building in time for change, partnership with the best and upholding of company culture. However, Nike lost focus on promoting women and minorities to senior positions. Men occupied higher level positions on significantly higher salaries than women. The corporation mentioned that the gender pay gap was partly due to a gender opportunity gap. It therefore, strategically planned to transform the workplace culture to reflect fundamental values of inclusion, respect and empowerment. Traditionally, Nike's management leadership was predominantly male and white and diversity had not been given its due place. Nike was committed to transform its culture to reflect equity and respect wherein employees felt included and empowered. Would Nike be able to match its proclaimed core values and its internal conduct to assuage women employees and athletes?
