Abstract
Fixing up homes in economically distressed Canton, Ohio, Paul Schumacher wanted to do something besides grunt work. In 1992, he developed an idea and financed it, serving a new customer niche, selling like crazy, and operating very smoothly. When the Great Recession hit and housing starts plummeted, his company - now a family business, and the largest custom home-builder in America - faced big trouble. Housing companies everywhere went bust. But not Schumacher Homes. Schumacher steered his company through the crisis, and it emerged as strong as ever.
