Abstract

This is part of a case series. This case focuses on the company's restructuring between 2008 and 2010 and offers an opportunity to see a remarkable turnaround strategy. The case starts with Clariant's iconic CEO, Hariolf Kottmann, taking office, whose appointment marks a turning point in the company's history. The new management team starts an intensive restructuring program for the near-bankrupt company during the global financial crisis and the subsequent economic recession. The case describes the strategic, organizational, and operational measures in detail, including the shutdown of unprofitable sites, the regrouping of the company's business units, and the gradual introduction of Clariant Excellence, a series of continuous and sustainable methods for efficient corporate development. Case A allows students and executives to see compelling examples of restructuring and change management. Thus, the first case is particularly suited for courses focusing on strategic management and turnaround.
