Abstract

Borosil Glass Works Ltd (Borosil), India's most trusted glassware brand was established in 1962 by BL Kheruka (Kheruka) in Kolkata. The company was manufacturing glass products in collaboration with Corning Glass Works (Corning). In 1988, Kheruka bought the shareholding from corning and became the sole owner of Borosil brand. In 1988, his son Pradeep Kheruka also joined the business. In 2006, Kheruka's grandson Shreevar Kheruka (Shreevar) entered the family business. When he joined Borosil, the company was facing challenges related to labour issues, scouting for an alternative site as Maharashtra Government had doubled electricity prices, etc. Shreevar solved all the issues by 2009. He introduced new product models, new sourcing, and had set up an alternative manufacturing site. In 2010, Kherukas started solar glass manufacturing with the name of Borosil Renewables Ltd and diversified their business operations. In 2013, Shreevar decided to leverage their sourcing and distribution expertise and evolve as a lifestyle brand. By 2017, Borosil became the market leader in India for laboratory glassware and microwavable kitchenware. Gradually, the company evolved to become a globally recognised multi-product, multi brand and multi-channel consumer centric organisation. As of 2020, the company had 4000 employees and was operating from seven locations. Despite facing the adverse impact of coronvirus in 2020, the company updated its technology. However, Borosil had to face competition from steel and plastic products. In such scenario, would Kherukas succeed in taking the business of glass product manufacturing to the next level?
