Abstract
This case explores ethics and social responsibility concerns within the global tea trade through the lens of a small business, Suki Tea Makers, that is attempting to balance people, planet, and profit. Tea is the second most consumed beverage globally after water; however, most students know very little about how this important commodity is produced. In addition to providing an overview of the tea industry, the case draws attention to the appalling working and living conditions on many tea estates. Key certification schemes, such as Fairtrade, which aim to address these abuses are discussed. Background information on Suki Tea is provided, including first-hand insights from one of the cofounders. Students are encouraged to reflect on the challenges associated with starting a business in an industry dominated by the ‘titans of tea’, as well as ensuring high ethical and social responsibility standards in the context of a complex global supply chain.
