Abstract

In August 2021, PepsiCo had made an announcement that it was hoping to become 'Net Water Positive' by 2030. The main objective of the company was to give back more water than the amount that was used by the company-owned as well as third-party manufacturing sites in high water-risk regions. Another objective was to provide safe access to water to 100 million people by 2030. The PepsiCo Foundation, the philanthropic arm of PepsiCo, had also launched a new $1 million programme with NGO WaterAid in order to bring safe water to the families residing in Sub-Saharan Africa. This new investment would help to improve the region's water infrastructure, develop new water supply systems and equitable sanitation facilities, and promote education on hygiene. However, some critics questioned whether these initiatives were real attempts made by the companies or just greenwashing. Against this background, would it be possible for PepsiCo to make its 'Net Water Positive' mission a reality by 2030?
