Abstract

Recognised as a major Electric Vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer in China, BYD Co Ltd (BYD) showed its technical supremacy in the global EV industry with the launch of the Blade Battery in March of 2020. The primary objective behind the roll-out was to minimise concerns linked with battery safety in EVs, about which Wang Chuanfu, the founder of BYD, emphasised the necessity of launching a technologically superior Blade Battery, which could resolve issues in battery safety and effectively redefine safety standards for the entire EV industry. In this regard, Blade Battery successfully passed a nail penetration test, which was observed as the most accurate way to test the thermal runaway of batteries. Furthermore, in addition to its high safety feature, Blade Battery possessed several other advantages such as lower cost facility and longer life cycle guarantee. However, Blade Battery faced several challenges but, despite knowing about them, management continued to work with other automobile manufacturers and supply Blade Battery for their vehicles. During this time, BYD also looked to spread its international operations and gain market shares in Europe. In this context, would Blade Battery become a safe bet for the global EV industry?
