Abstract
Versailles in January always looked a bit calm at the winter sun, with the magnificent gardens looking more modest. In early 2021, Versailles looked even more quiet. The COVID-19 pandemic had kept most of the visitors away, Chloe Marzin suddenly thought it might not have been that silent since the aftermath of the French Revolution. Chloe was HR manager for Le Grand Controle: a new 5-star hotel set to open in June 2021 within the Chateau de Versailles itself. With the new vaccine, there was finally light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel. But even leaving COVID-19 aside, opening a 5-star hotel in France’s most famous Palace was a gigantic project. It involved artisans from all around the country, sourcing the original furniture in auctions, working with historians... but the hardest was maybe hiring staff. That was proving to be a more complex task than she envisioned when taking the position as HR manager. With more than 100 employees, this hotel was going to be by far the most generous in the country on the staff per room ratio. Chloe was meeting graduates from the best schools every week, but many of them were put off by the need to work in a 18th-century costume and behaving like Versailles historical staff. She had to choose suitable candidates for an interview next week from the 5 CVs that had arrived on her desk, her agenda only allowed for two interviews. Who would she call later today?
