Abstract
In 'The Necessary Journey', Dr Ella F Washington asks company leaders one crucial question to DEI: 'What does a workplace utopia look like to you?'. Dr Washington, through the interviews and business DEI stories, reminds us that a truly inclusive workplace requires invention and reinvention, mistakes and humility, adaptation to a changing world, constant reflection, and sometimes significant sacrifice. She also lays out how leaders can get there through real-life stories of DEI leaders. Along the way, Washington provides a framework for thinking about where these companies are on their journeys and where you and your company may be too. Chapter 8 discusses the journey of Infosys, a technology company based in India, to highlight how a non-US company's non-traditional expansion approach to US workforce recruiting led to a unique DEI advantage. This chapter is excerpted from 'The Necessary Journey: Making Real Progress on Equity and Inclusion'.
