Abstract

The IFA (England-France Interconnector) is a 2,000 MW electricity interconnector that links the systems of England and France. The value of IFA transmission capacity is closely linked to the price of electricity in the English and French markets. Over the IFA''s lifetime, liberalisation has fundamentally reshaped the electricity industry in Europe. The nascent inter-European market for electricity provides opportunities to discuss the interaction of demand and supply and the liquidity of markets. The case also outlines the auctioning procedures used to sell electricity transmission capacity on the IFA, and can be used to illustrate the effect of auction rules on bidding behaviour.
