Abstract

The case focuses on the innovative sustainable business models of three organisations who, together, founded the Mount Elgon Livelihood project. The organisations are Vi Agroforestry, an NGO who implemented the project, The Livelihoods Funds, who financed the project, and Brookside Dairy Ltd (Brookside), a subsidiary of global dairy giant Danone, who guaranteed to purchase milk products from the farmers. The three organisations worked together to improve the livelihood of 30,000 farmers through sustainable value creation. The project involved 15 cooperatives and 1,200 farmers groups. The three organisations worked together to improve food security, efficient milk supply, and protect ecosystems and species in the Lake Victoria Basin and Mount Elgon region. Using Sustainable Agriculture Land Management (SALM) practices developed by Vi Agroforestry, the three organisations empowered farmers to be resilient to climate change by separating carbon dioxide from the environment and storing it in the soil and trees, and reducing methane produced by dairy cows by increasing milk production. The project aimed to restore 20,000 hectares of deforested land, generate one million carbon credits and increase cropfarm yields by 30%.
