Abstract
Kochi Water Metro (KWM) project was launched to provide water metro services in Greater Kochi, a coastal city of Kerala, India. Kochi had crisscrossing canals and rivers linked to a backwater system. The planning of KWM project had started in 2016. KWM was planned to have a network of 15 routes covering 76 kms. It was designed to have a fleet of 78 fast, battery-powered electric hybrid boats. KWM project was part of Kochi Metro Rail Limited's (KMRL) larger plan to establish the first integrated multimodal transport system in Kochi, with mobility on rail, road, and water. KWM was not merely a transport system but a socially inclusive transport system as it was expected to improve livelihoods. As per the original schedule, KWM was to become operational in December 2020. However, the launch of the project had been postponed numerous times. The first phase of India's first water metro in Kochi was flagged off on April 25th 2023. The water metro as per the revised schedule would become fully operational by 2035. KWM project had been delayed as the project was bogged down by several procedural challenges. In addition, there would be a number of operational challenges too. Would Kochi Water Metro rejig Urban Mobility in Greater Kochi?
