Abstract

In 2022, Artificial Intelligence (AI), which had been in use for a long time, was going through a transformational phase with increased interest and investments in this space. Big names such as Google, Meta, and Microsoft in addition to several startups were active players in AI. But it was San Francisco-based OpenAI, a startup initially co-founded by Elon Musk, which hogged the limelight with its ChatGPT said to be the best AI chatbot released to the public through a free, easy-to-use web interface. While ChatGPT awed the world with its ability to mimic conversations, it could also write poetry and prose, solve coding problems, and synthesise knowledge from the web. But there were major concerns about the potential for academic fraud, misinformation, and mass unemployment. There was also fear that the big players were rushing developments in AI to the detriment of humanity. While some experts believed that AI was set to revolutionise the world and that humanity should take advantage of this instead of fretting about a dystopian future, there were others who believed that the world was not yet ready to deal with the impact of such AI tools. Were chatbots such as ChatGPT posing a threat to mankind in the near future?
