Abstract

More than 75,000 NGO are operating in the world, active in 300 countries and territories in areas as diversified as agriculture, water supply, health, economic development, education or microfinancing. The missions dedicated to these organizations involve a large number players, activists and campaigners who struggle to learn, coordinate and create meaningful and impactful change. Gathering, training and harmonizing the efforts of all these actors represents an urgent need and is a mission in itself. For a renowned international NGO such as Oxfam, creating an Academy meeting these challenges would be a definite opportunity and would enable the organization to score double. Such an initiative would also provide the means to reshape their own identity from a large corporate NGO to a relatable NGO that supports the evolving grassroots activist groups and the new incoming generation. This case study explores the specific features that characterize the NGO environment on the one hand, and of Oxfam as a major international body, before it highlights a detailed proposal for an Oxfam Academy for activists.
