Abstract
Kevin and Caryl Shaw were the founders of Heatherlea, a successful wild-life watching company, and needed to decide the future of the company as they approached retirement. As Managing Director, Kevin’s primary concern was to establish an enduring future for Heatherlea after his retirement, including a strong product profile, and the welfare of loyal employees. There were three mutually-exclusive possible exit routes - 1) family succession; 2) sell the company; and 3) employee-ownership. Each route offered clear advantages and disadvantages, though a clear choice needed to be made.
