Abstract
This case traces global developments in the digitization of navigational charts, a major technological innovation in maritime navigation. It examines the key roles played by international organisations and national hydrography units in the spread of this digital technology as a replacement for paper charts. In particular, it discusses the role of Singapore''s Hydrographic Department as a key promoter of Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) in the maritime community. It describes the moves taken to implement this new technology and the efforts made by the department to promote the use of the new technology in the region and in international organisations. It also discusses the impact and responses to this new technology among the various stakeholders and the possible systemic changes it could bring to the business of maritime navigation. This case contains colour inserts.
