Abstract
Founded in 2015, Hazel Health (Hazel) was a leading school-based telehealth services provider adopting a socially driven sustainable business model in California. Hazel started by offering physical telehealth services through schools, with the intent of reaching K-12 children irrespective of family income, geography, race, ethnicity, insurance status, or ability to pay. Even as the COVID-19 pandemic exposed gaps in children's mental health, Hazel introduced its mental wellness program to handle these gaps and to provide proactive care. Hazel thus took a holistic approach to paediatric care, ensuring that students received the care they needed, when and where they needed it, both at school and at home. As the innovative company was scaling up rapidly, growth depended on overcoming multiple challenges including shrinking school budgets and Medicaid budget cuts. Would the founders of Hazel be able to overcome these hurdles and cater to the health care needs of school children across the US?
