Abstract

Spencer's Retail Ltd (SRL), one of the largest retail chains headquartered in Kolkata, India had come up with innovative employee engagement policies during 2020. By forging a great relationship with the frontline staff, the retail giant had enabled them to perform better consistently. By adopting strategic HR moves, SRL helped the frontline staff to get promoted to the upper echelons of the organisation in accordance with their core skills and performance. SRL also followed strategic retention measures using technology, while managers focused on the 'human' factor to resolve complicated HR issues. In addition, SRL focussed on annual employee engagement surveys to get an idea of employee mindsets. Nevertheless, the organisation needed to create a perfect work-life balance by working on a set of SOPs to optimise performance. Was SRL setting new trends in the retail industry? Would SRL be able to overcome the generational shift while devising a futuristic engagement strategy?
