Abstract
Apple Inc (Apple), an American technology company, was among the first to produce personal computers and later ventured into consumer electronics products. During a time when the effects of the climate crisis were becoming more apparent, the California-based company aimed to portray its product as a sustainable technological option. Apple declared in September 2023 that every smartwatch model it would release in the future would be 'carbon neutral'. Apple was able to cut the carbon dioxide emissions from the production and sale of a single smartwatch from 36.7 kg to 8.1 kg, which represented a reduction in product emissions of almost 78%, thanks to design and renewable energy innovations. This accomplishment represented a significant advancement towards the company's target of having every product carbon neutral by 2030. Its goal was to achieve carbon neutrality across its whole global supply chain. Apple purchased forestry carbon offsets to make up for the emissions which it was unable to completely reduce. Some experts believed that Apple's action called into question the veracity of its 'carbon neutral' claim. They were further skeptical whether Apple's environmental commitments were sincere or mere greenwashing?
