Abstract
Kota, a city in Rajasthan, India, has number of coaching centres. These coaching centres prepare students in India for competitive exams such as Joint Entrance Examination - Main, Joint Entrance Examination - Advanced and National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, for admission in engineering colleges, IITs and in MBBS and BDS programmes in medical and dental colleges, respectively. The coaching centres have dedicated faculty, provided exceptional study material, and used unique teaching methodologies. The curriculum was exhaustive, and the schedule was strenuous. The coaching centres had a good track record in preparing students for competitive exams. It was reported that the success rate of Kota was 'double-digit 10%' as against the national success rate of about 3%. The coaching centers also had a darker side - student suicides. From January 2023-October 2023, 27 students who were preparing for competitive exams in Kota had committed suicide. The grueling culture of intensive exam coaching, familial and social burdens were blamed for the students suicides. The Kota coaching centres were also entangled with several other challenges. What should be the way forward for the coaching centers to improve the way they function and stay ahead of the competitors?
